An Immodest Proposal
Guest blogger and friend of VitW, Robb Wilson, offers a plan for preventing the pornography industry in California from being a burden to the rest of the country and for making them beneficial to the Republican Party.

Our honorable Republican Leadership has clarified some very difficult issues for not just its supporters, not just all Americans, but the entire world. Less than a year ago, a hard fought battle to get a Defense of Marriage Constitutional Amendment onto the national ballot was lost in the Senate. Many Republican leaders worked hard for the idea that marriage should be legally defined to be between one man and one woman for the entire nation. In the face of this defeat, they have turned for solace (and campaign contributions for the midterm elections!) to the temple of the traditional nuclear family—the pornographic industry.
According to the following articles from World Net Daily (click here, here, and here), Mark Kulkis, owner of a ‘leading’ pornographic movie studio, for a mere $5000 contribution to the Republican Nation Congressional Committee, has earned himself and one of his more well-known ‘stars’ seats at a prestigious Washington DC fundraisers dinner next week. Kulkis and actress Mary Carey will be present at a White House dinner on June 14.
When asked why he is a Republican, Kulkis said, "Republicans bill themselves as the pro-business party. Well, you won't find a group of people more pro-business than pornographers. We contributed over $10 billion to the national economy last year." (emphases added) There really is no question of legality as this is not soft money, but truly hard-core dollars. According to World Net Daily, the source of this story, “Kulkis is currently an honorary chairman on the NRCC's Business Advisory Council, a roundtable of millionaire business entrepreneurs who advocate a robust "pro-business agenda."” Carey herself has a rather colorful resume on both sides of the law. She was one of the many
Response from Republicans has been minimal to positive, and due to the limited distribution of the story, apparent backlash has been almost none existent. Thus, before any of you get too riled up, let me throw in my two cents:
We should support the RNCC in their acceptance of the money for some very simple and straightforward reasons.
First, money is money and so we shouldn’t question where it comes from. If you don’t believe me, ask Al Gore about the support he received on behalf of the DNC from the Chinese government. It seems McCain and Feingold are the only ones with a burr in their saddle over stupid things like campaign finance ethics, so the GOP has taken Campaign Finance 101 from Professor Soros.
Second, we should not bat an eye over this little donation because it finally gives the Left a real reason to mock us. If they are going to laugh at us, they might as well have a good reason. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, they really only want to have equal opportunities for all families. To be cynical (and more honest?) they are out to destroy the nuclear family as old fashioned, non-relevant, overly restrictive, and most important, intolerant. The GOP pushes for the nuclear family, yet proudly accepts large donations from the one industry that is arguably the most destructive industry to the nuclear family. Pornography objectifies women (primarily), cheapens the idea of fidelity to one’s spouse, promotes promiscuity (before and during marriage), is addictive, causes men (mostly) to have false fantastic ideas about sex and either pulls them away from their spouse or promotes unrealistic expectations upon her (which tends to have the same effect as putting a wedge between them), and can put an enormous drain on the family finances due to the expense of pornographic materials. Remember $10 billion in revenue just last year! Show me a man who has committed any sex crime, and most habitual adulterers, and I will bet large money on their involvement in porn. Yes, there are many men who consume porn and don’t do anything else immoral. Yet compare their lives and marital/relational satisfaction with someone who doesn’t use porn, and see which category you would rather be in.
Third, we can support the stereotype that the GOP is the party for big business. Just ask Kulkis. (This is also reason number two for the Left to have just cause for ‘marriment.’)
Fourth, we can continue to promote the ‘traditional’ notion that women playthings, not people. That’ll teach the feminazis.
Fifth, it teaches future Republicans that character counts. Look at all the interesting characters that we honor and support (and vice versa, of course!$!$!)
Sixth, it proves the entertainment industry is not 100% behind the Democrats. Thank God for small favors.
Seventh, it also proves that Republicans are able to cut loose and have fun, too. Let the Democrats have Janet Jackson, we have Mary Carey. Janet only partially undresses for the camera, and then accidentally. Mary goes full Monty as soon as you say “Action!”
In truth, we should be gracious and understanding regarding the issue. The RNCC took Kulkis’s money thinking it was because he wanted to promote marriage. What he said was that he wanted to promote Mary.
One listener to a drive time radio show called to suggest that what we are observing is the embryonic stages of a new Cabinet level agency, the Department of Hospitality. (Maybe it’s time for Monica to begin interning again.)
I can’t wait to see the photos from the event. Can you imagine a photo of Laura Bush, Olympia Snowe, Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Mary Carey sitting together discussing family values, trading recipes, and their visions for America? It brings a tear to my eye.
These are our political heroes. We elected them, and we’re stuck with them. We’ve made our bed, and now...
